From Homelessness to Netflix Success: The Extraordinary Journey of Sir Marco Robinson

Sir Marco Robinson’s life is a testament to resilience, reinvention and relentless action, a message driven home during my recent interview with Sir Marco. Speaking from Buxton, ahead of a training run, Marco’s energy is unmistakable even through a screen. Behind his success lies a remarkable story of hardship, self-discovery, and a belief that age and adversity are assets, not obstacles.

At just 21, Marco was homeless and drifting, earning only £51 a week in a closed-up shop. His prospects shifted when he took a commission-only sales job in timeshare, enduring six fruitless weeks as the team’s lowest performer. “That was my rock bottom,” he recalls. The turning point came after his boss gave him an ultimatum, and a top salesman handed him a well-worn book on belief. Marco read it eight times in one night and, the next day, held his nerve during a five-hour pitch, landing his first major sale £10,000 to a blind couple. That moment set him on a new trajectory, soon becoming Salesperson of the Month and later running a billion-dollar company in Malaysia.

Success, Marco says, comes down to three things: knowing exactly what you want, clearly understanding why you want it and then taking massive, committed action. He keeps a copy of ‘Think and Grow Rich’ as his personal compass. “Nothing replaces action,” he insists, a principle that remains the backbone of his philosophy.

After leaving corporate sales in 2000, Marco forged his own path as an entrepreneur and seminar host, taking after the likes of Tony Robbins. He self-promoted his events and, in 2008, penned an international best-selling book about his unique route through the world of sales. His approach challenges the myth that entrepreneurship is a young person’s game. “Age is a number,” he states, referencing Ray Kroc and Colonel Sanders as icons who proved that wisdom and tenacity mature over decades.

Marco’s profile rose further when Channel 4 approached him for a television series addressing social housing. On camera, he made headlines by gifting homes and paying off mortgages, bringing his story and his mission to a national audience. This exposure paved the way for a lifelong dream: filmmaking. Inspired by Bond movies and driven by his childhood fascination with adventure, he raised £5 million in 2015 to produce ‘Legacy of Lies’. The journey was not smooth, COVID-19 delayed its release by eighteen months - but when it finally debuted on Netflix, it soared to number 4 in the UK and number 2 in the USA.

These days, Marco continues to break new ground. He’s studying singing, having performed his first concert and is currently writing a musical, ‘Legacy of Spies’, which draws on his own life story. He’s candid about his ADHD diagnosis, calling it a “superpower” when harnessed with strict self-management tools such as hard deadlines and focused, creative work sessions. For those seeking mentorship, Marco’s message is clear: burning ambition is non-negotiable and willingness to act is critical.

Above all, Sir Marco Robinson’s journey teaches us that setbacks are springboards, and no dream has an expiration date. His story exemplifies the spirit of Elevate magazine: rising up and lifting others as you rise.
