Family-Run Success: Phil and Sandra on their manufacturing company Realco
Established in 1983 by Alan and Renee, Realco began as a small operation with a grand vision. Their passion for manufacturing high-quality straps drove their dedication and hard work, laying the foundation for what would become a thriving business. Today, Realco is a well-established company, successfully run by their son Phil and his wife Sandra, who took over in 1999. Over the past 25 years, Phil and Sandra have navigated the highs and lows of business management, and in this exclusive feature, they share their journey, values, and future aspirations.
Alan and Renee’s initial goal was clear: to create a manufacturing business known for producing the highest quality straps. Their commitment to this vision fuelled their tireless efforts and became the cornerstone of Realco’s identity. This drive and inspiration were seamlessly passed down to Phil and Sandra, who took over the reins and continued to build on the solid foundation laid by Alan and Renee.
Reflecting on their early days, Phil emphasizes the mentorship he received from Renee: “She taught me the essentials of running a business—understanding costs, managing expenses, and ensuring the business was working for them and in the right way.” He also shares insights into his father Alan’s sales philosophy: “It didn’t matter whether it cost him 50 pounds to get a ten-pound sale.” Alan’s dedication to securing sales, regardless of cost, underscored his commitment to the company’s growth and success.
Under Phil and Sandra’s leadership, Realco has evolved significantly. The company has expanded its operations, purchased its own premises, and now employs over 20 staff members. Long-term employees have been integral to maintaining the company’s culture, ensuring stability and continuity. Phil and Sandra have worked hard to preserve the core values instilled by Alan and Renee, fostering a culture of honesty, transparency, and dedication that remains at the heart of Realco.
Before joining Realco, Sandra had a diverse career background as a machinist and in catering, while Phil began his journey with the company at the age of 18. This early start marked the beginning of Phil’s deep commitment to the family business, a commitment that continues to drive Realco forward today.
Realco’s journey has not been without its challenges. Financial difficulties, bad debts, and economic downturns have tested the company’s resilience. Phil recalls some of the tougher times: “We had big, bad debts and things we couldn’t pay. But since 2007, it started to pick up.” He describes how the country’s economic state has impacted Realco, noting that there have been several major recessions since they took over: “We were on the edge of not being able to stay in business.”
A significant milestone for Realco came with the purchase of a new building, which consolidated operations and provided a solid foundation for future expansion. Phil reflects on this achievement: “We had to get everybody working from the same place and ensure everyone was on the same page.”
For Phil and Sandra, balancing work and personal life is more than just a goal—it’s a way of life. Despite the demands of running a business, they make time for their personal passions. Phil finds enjoyment in watching football and playing pool whilst Sandra enjoys playing darts, these activities that provide a necessary break from the daily grind and a way to recharge. This balance is crucial not only for their well-being but also for maintaining a healthy and productive work environment.
Phil discusses the importance of honesty and transparency within the business, “Being honest and fair… People have to be told”. It’s important to communicate openly and ensure that everyone involved understands the situation. He explains how even if it’s uncomfortable, it’s about building trust and maintaining strong, open relationships with both employees and customers.
Looking ahead, Realco is focused on ensuring a smooth transition of leadership. Phil’s nephew, Brad, is being groomed for a greater role within the company. This careful preparation reflects Realco’s dedication to family values and the importance of passing the torch seamlessly from one generation to the next. Brad’s training is a testament to the company’s commitment to preserving its legacy while embracing new ideas and innovations.
The future looks promising as Realco continues to serve customers across the North West and throughout the UK. With a new hire set to join the team, the company is well-positioned for ongoing growth and success.
